SC North Island Lighthouse (Georgetown Lighthouse)

North Island Lighthouse (also known as Georgetown Lighthouse) is the oldest lighthouse in South Carolina. It was built in the late 1790s-1800 as a wood structure. It was destroyed by gale winds in 1806. It was rebuilt as a stone structure for $20,000 in the early 1800s. The base walls are 5 feet thick. The walls at the top are 2 feet thick. The lighthouse was used as a look out during the civil war. At one time their were houses next to the lighthouse but is no longer there. The lighthouse was the last lighthouse to be automated in South Carolina.
